Esmarch Bandage

Description

Bandage designed around the 1870s by Friedrich von Esmarch (1823-1908), famous as the "Esmarch bandage." As a professor of surgery at the University of Kiel and the chief army physician during the Franco-Prussian War, Esmarch created this bandage specifically for use in field medicine. The primary motivation behind his invention was to control bleeding and minimize blood loss during surgical procedures and battlefield injuries. It consisted of a piece of linen or cotton with three sides, measuring 127 cm at the base and 61 cm on the sides. The bandage could be used in thirty-two different ways, either folded or open, as shown by this specimen dating back to 1914. The Esmarch bandage remains an essential technique in modern medicine. This historical piece bears witness to the lasting impact of Friedrich von Esmarch's work in the medical and humanitarian field.
