Film cans from the Film Library of the League of Red Cross Societies
Description
The earliest mentions of films appeared almost at the very beginning of the League in 1919. Having recognised the potential of this medium to disseminate public health information, the League encouraged its member National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies to invest in this technology. Unfortunately, none of these earliest films survive, but the current collection of films dating from the 1930s is a significant part of the Movement’s iconographic heritage. The films show the richness of advertising approaches of the time, as well as the evolution of audiovisual methods adopted within the Red Cross / Red Crescent world. Subjects covered by the films include first aid, blood donations, the Junior Red Cross, or general presentations of National Society activities. The films stocked at the Museum are composed of cellulose acetate or polyester; Cinémathèque Suisse in Lausanne holds the cellulose nitrate films. Almost all of these films have been digitised, and a growing selection can be viewed online: https://www.youtube.com/@ifrcfilmarchive
