Bullet received by ICRC delegate Dr Georges Henny
Description
Dr Georges Henny, delegate of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Madrid during the Spanish Civil War, was hit by this bullet on 8 December 1936. The plane in which he was travelling at the time of the shooting also carried the journalist Louis Delaprée, who lost his life, and two orphan girls who were being evacuated. The delegations on the ground were responsible for enforcing the neutrality of the Red Cross sign, setting up information services on prisoners for their families and on the dead, and distributing aid in Spain. This attack comes against a background of increasing difficulties for the International Committee of the Red Cross in its efforts to evacuate children from conflict zones. In November 1936, both sides of the civil war demanded that children be exchanged for civilian or military prisoners.
