The world-renowned glass artists and designers, Monica Guggisberg and Philip Baldwin, are donating their work "The People's Wall" to the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum. The inauguration will take place on Thursday, 20th March 2025, at 6:30 PM in our exhibition spaces.
"The People’s Wall" was created for the exhibition "Under An Equal Sky" at Canterbury Cathedral, commemorating the centenary of World War I in 2018. The exhibition explored themes of memory, migration, and ethnicity. Among the ten installations presented, "The People’s Wall" stood out for its optimistic and positive approach, celebrating multiculturalism and coexistence. The artwork takes the form of a large glass case, nearly 3 meters high, within which are hundreds of glass pieces of various sizes and shapes, all hand-sculpted. These pieces symbolize multiculturalism and respect for the identities that make it up.
To present their work, a symbol of peace and hope, the artists chose the Museum for its symbolic significance. “We want this sculpture to find a home that matches its message and beauty [...] It celebrates multiculturalism and coexistence. Switzerland embodies these values while also facing the challenges they bring.” — Philip Baldwin and Monica Guggisberg.
"The People’s Wall" will be permanently installed at the entrance of the Museum's permanent exhibition. It will be located near the archives of the International Prisoners of War Agency, which are registered by UNESCO, directly linking it to the historical context the artwork references.
